Menlo Park, CAMap of Menlo Park, CA
Menlo Park, CA got its start by two immigrants from Ireland, Dennis J. Oliver and D. C. McGlynn (Oliver’s brother-in-law). They purchased land near the intersections of Middle Ave and El Camino Real in the 1850’s and erected a wooden arch over the entrance to the property declaring it “Menlo Park”. “Menlo” refers to their home in the village of Menlo in County Galway, Ireland. When the railroad (San Francisco and San Jose Rail Road) put a station near their property in 1867, they named the station “Menlo Park Station”. The Menlo Park Station is the oldest continuously operating rail station in California. The town grew modestly as wealthy San Franciscans built summer estates in the area.
Menlo Park, CA remained a rural community until World War I. With the First World War, the U.S. set up Camp Fremont in 1917 to house and train 43,000 soldiers. The camp closed in 1917. More expansion occurred during World War II (1943-1946) with the construction of Dibble General Hospital for the treatment of soldiers injured in the South Pacific.
Menlo Park, CA’s economy centers on its Sand Hill Road commercial area. Many venture capital firms, private equity companies, and professional services made it their home. The commercial real estate along Sand Hill Road was some of the most expensive in the world. Some of the largest employers in Menlo Park, CA include: Oracle America, SRI International, Tyco Electronics, and Intuit.
